Frequently Asked Questions
We get lots of questions!
Here's the ones we tend to get most often..
Participation involves signing and wearing a pink STAND UP Pledge shirt. Your first step is to register. Once you've registered, you'll be given access to the materials you'll need to participate. School and workplace participants can print up sign up sheets to find out who wants to participate and record their needed shirt sizes. You can also print up posters to help promote the day, parental letters, sponsorship proposals and activity ideas. Once you've registered, you'll also be able to order pledge shirts from our secure online shopping cart.
A major misconception about bullying is that it happens to an age specific demographic. Bullying happens to everyone of all ages, and International STAND UP to Bullying Day is for everyone. When you register, you will be asked whether you are an individual participant, a school, a workplace or a team or group. The benefits of participating may be different for each type of participant, but rest assure they're plentiful and very worth it!
No, you can register without ordering anything, but our final number of those who took the stand will be based on how many actually participated by taking the pledge on the pink shirt and wearing it, meaning you must order a shirt in order to be counted as a participant.
Shirts are currently available in English and French and will be available in Spanish soon.
Absolutey not. Registration is free, and you are not committed to order anything by registering. The total number of STANDS will be based on the amount of shirts ordered, added to the amount of participants wearing shirts from last year, so don't avoid registering because you're worried funding won't come through for the shirts.
Participation was designed to be very easy and un-onobtrusive to a regular school day. Many schools choose to organize a full day of acitivities surrounding the stand, while others just hand out the shirts to those wanting to participate and go on with their regular school day. If you would like to have a full day of events, there are activity ideas and printable materials to use once you've registered. Schools ordering 50 or more shirts will also receive a free "STOOD UP" flag to fly on the school's flag pole during the day.
Absolutely! From experience, we've found that the benefits for participating schools are not in any way inclusive to taking the stand on any particular date. Many of the schools and workplaces who have participated in previous years have done so on dates they chose to work with their own schedule. We suggest doing so as well if you're worried about other committments on the same day interfering with the stand.
All shirts are $10 each plus shipping and handling. The shirts are all designed and made by our subsidiary clothing company, "Bully Clothing" to be very hip and appealing to students. They're all ring-spun, meaning they have a soft, vintage feel to them. This makes them more expensive to produce, but we wanted them to be something that participants would be proud to wear any day of the year!
Funding generated from the sale of the shirts helps us support the other initiatives we work on throughout the year.
Our shop is set to process orders in USD currency. Canadian participants will be given the opportunity to change the currency to CAD when they proceed to checkout. The price does not change for Canadian customers (still 10). Participants in other countries will be given the opportunity to process their payment in GBP at £5 per shirt.
International STAND UP to Bullying Day is much more than just a pink shirt day! We've worked extremely hard to organize the day to be highly effective in combating bullying and although just wearing any old pink shirt shows great intentions, it doesn't utilize a number of things that occur by signing and wearing a STAND UP Pledge shirt. Please check out this link to see why we require participants to wear STAND UP Plegde shirts in order to be counted as participants.
We HIGHLY encourage schools with policies on uniforms to participate in International STAND UP to Bullying Day. The shirts will be MUCH MORE effective in schools with uniforms as they will stand out from the uniforms. Many students will likely want to participate simply to avoid wearing the uniform for the day and we're completely fine with that. Regardless of the reason for the student taking the pledge, it is a STEP FORWARD towards STANDING UP for victims.
We ask administrators to evaluate the reasoning for the current uniform policy. It is normally to create a more positive atmosphere in the school. The rule instills value and avoids alienating students. Making an exceptance for the stand would achieve these identical values and show that the school is committed to creating a safe, positive atmosphere for its students. Sometimes rules can be bent a bit when the outcome is parallel with the initial goal!
We get this a lot, and WE LOVE YOU FOR IT! We often have little things that we need help on and have a growing list of people willing to lend a hand. If you'd like us to add your name, send an email with your name and contact details to volunteerATstandupday.com (replace the AT with the sign!) Tell us a little about yourself and what your skills are. This is a growing movement and we're open to any ideas you have!
The best thing you can do right now to help, is to START TELLING PEOPLE! We truly believe this support structure for victims of bullying is out there, and IT'S HUGE! We just need to let people know how to join together and identify themselves to those who need it. Be creative; send letters to your local media outlits, contact your local schools to tell them you want them to participate, send emails to all of your friends. We really need each participant to make an effort to spread the word in order for this to continue to be successful!
